A next-generation Lab Information System for BioReference Laboratories, built to manage patient histories, diagnostic results, and physician records across high-volume clinical workflows. I led the UX and flow design through EWS, the offshore engineering partner on the program.

Lab Information System – UX Case Study

A Lab Information System is the spine of a diagnostic lab. Every specimen, every result, and every physician record moves through it, and three very different groups depend on it at once: lab technicians processing volume under time pressure, doctors reading results, and admin staff keeping records straight. When the interface slows down, real clinical work slows down with it.

My scope here was purely UX and flow. I audited the legacy system, rebuilt the information architecture around how work actually moves through a lab, mapped the end-to-end journeys for each role, and delivered the interface and component system that engineering built against.

I ran a parallel engagement on ATVIVO, a patient lab history and records platform in the same space, documented separately.

The Challenge

The legacy system worked on paper, but buckled under real clinical volume

Fragmented workflow: Split screens forced constant switching between patient info, test results, and reports

High cognitive load: Dense medical terminology with no visual hierarchy meant everything competed for attention

Risk of data loss: Save states were unclear and form behavior was inconsistent, so people never fully trusted the system

Slow onboarding: New staff took far too long to get productive, which hurts in a role with regular turnover

Led the full UX redesign, from audit through interface delivery:

  • Ran the UX audit and workflow analysis with lab technicians and admin staff
  • Restructured the information architecture around real lab operations, not the old database layout
  • Mapped end-to-end flows for technicians, physicians, and administrators
  • Designed the complete interface in Figma, screen by screen
  • Built a component system so the redesign stayed consistent as the product scaled

Killed the split-screen model
- Replaced fragmented panels with a single structured view
- Patient info, test data, and physician details organized into progressive sections
- Users stay in one place instead of hunting across screens for one record

Clear Information Hierarchy

Made dense clinical data readable at a glance
- Grouped related medical data by how staff actually use it
- Added visual separation, plain labels, and breathing room between fields
- Pushed the critical fields to the top so the important stuff is never buried

Smart Form Experience

Removed the fear of losing work
- Auto-save with an indicator that always shows the current state
- Inline validation on medical entries, catching errors at the point of entry
- Cut redundant inputs so the same data is never typed twice

Component-Based UI

Built the system to hold up as it grows
- Reusable components for data tables, form inputs, and status indicators
- One consistent pattern language across every module
- Gave engineering a clear, repeatable spec to build against
